AIR-TO-AIR MISSILE SIMULATION BENCHMARK RUN ON THE ARTS SYSTEM WITH THE STARLIGHT ACCELERATOR

DESCRIPTION

The benchmark simulated the flight dynamics and guidance/control systems of an air-to-air missile (AAM). An ARTS system with six STARLIGHT Arithmetic Computation Modules (ACM) was used in the simulation.

PROGRAM SIZE

The source program size was 1 MB, of which a majority (945KB) was function tables. The simulation contained 82 integrations, 1265 summations, and 2023 multiplications. User defined functions consisted of 15 functions of 1 variable, 6 functions of 2 variables, 31 functions of 3 variables, and 12 functions of 4 variables. Typical number of data points used in a function of 4 variables was 23 x 10 x 6 x 4, or 5,520.

STEP SIZE AND INTEGRATION ALGORITHM

A step size of 2 milliseconds was used for the entire model. The integration algorithm was Adams-Bashforth, second order (AB2).

BENCHMARK RESULTS

ARTS-STARLIGHT solutions matched results obtained with the Applied Dynamics AD-100. Frame times of ARTS-STARLIGHT (using six ACMs) and the AD-100 are shown below:

SYSTEM

FRAME TIMES

ARTS-STARLIGHT

0.1242 milliseconds

AD-100

1.8000 milliseconds

ARTS-STARLIGHT was 14.5 times faster than the AD-100 in this benchmark, running the simulation up to 16 times faster than real time.
